After years of respite from traveling, my recent journey to the luxurious Higuerón Resort in Fuengirola, Spain marked a return to exploring new destinations for my website. It became the first exception or detour to the otherwise affordable places I have reviewed earlier. As I wrote in the introduction I might do these up scale places too once in a while. But the prices were not actually that over the top and found them affordable to even anyone with normal salary if you don’t want to stay in the resort.

Despite my excitement, the journey left me exhausted and sweaty after a long train ride from Malaga followed by a challenging uphill climb to the resort. Once there at the premises, finding the right place within the resort was a bit tricky at first. The area is wast and even the Spa receptionist was unclear in describing the way to the clinic that was on the other side of the huge tennis fields. I ended up going out from the other side wondering where I am. Then came back in once again and asked some local random passer bye to make a phone call to the clinic from my phone to clarify the location.
Finally the the receptionist walked with me and showed the way. However, as the clinic had afternoon break and opened at five PM I was offered a refreshing shower that revitalized me before my appointment at Blue Wellness, a specialized medical wellness center nestled within the resort.
Upon meeting Laura Navaz, the operator at Blue Wellness, I learned about the clinic’s focus on advanced therapies such as Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and Photobiomodulation using red and blue LED light. Trained by nurse Maria Leonor Pais, who was in turn trained by Dr. Rafael del Pino Monge, Laura’s expertise instilled confidence in me as I embarked on my experimental treatments.
At Blue Wellness, I immersed myself in half an hour session in the hyperbaric chamber followed by a 20-minute session of red light therapy. The rejuvenating effects of these treatments were nothing short of remarkable, as I emerged energized and revitalized, ready to make the return journey without a hint of exhaustion.
Backed by a specialist doctor with extensive experience in hyperbaric medicine, the clinic ensures treatments are administered with precision and adherence to scientific protocols in a comfortable and secure environment.
What is Photobiomodulation with red LED light and how does it work?
Photobiomodulation(PBM) with red LED light uses specific wavelengths, typically between 630 and 660 nm, to act on the mitochondria of your cells. By stimulating these structures, the production of ATP, the main source of cellular energy, is boosted, which can improve the repair and regeneration capacity of tissues.
It’s application in reducing pain and inflammation, supporting healing, and skin care has been scientifically studied. You can find some papers for example here, here and here. There are promising results also in the treatment of CFS/ME with Photobiomodulation.
At Blue Wellness you lie down on a comfortable bed, receiving light on your body without pain, excessive heat or invasive procedures.
Operating within the resort’s On Clinic (their in-house health & wellness unit), Blue Wellness stands out for its focus on advanced treatments including injury recovery, prevention, and rehabilitation, catering to individuals seeking holistic well-being solutions. While Higuerón Resort offers an array of spa services, the clinical expertise and technological advancements at Blue Wellness set it apart as a destination for oxygen and light-based therapies, promising a unique and transformative wellness experience.
The resort’s director, Mónica Sánchez, described On Clinic as “destined to guests seeking recovery, health, beauty, or longevity,” with a physiotherapy team that works with top Spanish national sports teams. (via their partner KINECT)
KINECT (Clínica Kinect Fisioterapia) is a sports physiotherapy and osteopathy clinic founded in 2012 in central Madrid by Jose (a physiotherapist and osteopath, Col. 5708). It now has three locations: Madrid, Málaga, and Fuengirola (the latter at the Higuerón Tennis Center).

I also met one old Finnish lady who gave me short commentary on how she benefited from those treatments after she experienced brain hemorrhage due to a tumor. At the resort I saw many Scandinavians and as Fuengirola has the largest concentration of Finns outside of Finland it was no surprise to come across with one.
